FRANKFORT, KY - The Kentucky Public Service Commission (PSC) has approved a proposal by Big Rivers Electric Corp. to build seven small solar power facilities across its service territory:

  • Livingston County Middle School, Burna - 10 kW - Jackson Purchase Energy

  • McCracken County High School, Paducah - 10 kW - Jackson Purchase Energy

  • Mike Miller Park, Benton - 10 kW - Jackson Purchase Energy

  • Kenergy offices, Henderson and Owensboro - 30 kW each - Kenergy

  • Meade RECC offices, Brandenburg - 20 kW; and Hardinsburg - 10 kW - Meade RECC

MURRAY, Ky. -- Amy Bryan Watson, award-winning broadcast anchor and journalist, was recently named one of the 2017 recipients of the Distinguished Alumni Award.

Watson will be honored at the Distinguished Alumni Award banquet to be held April 21 at 6 p.m. in the CFSB's Center Murray Room and will have the opportunity to speak about her professional experiences. The banquet is open to the public with tickets available for $30 at murraystate.edu/distinguishedalumni until April 14.

Quit-smoking bill receives final passage

FRANKFORT--Drugs and services that help Kentuckians quit smoking or stop using other tobacco products would be more easily accessed under health insurance plans or Medicaid under a bill now on its way to becoming law.

Senate Bill 89 "will improve the health of Kentuckians and save taxpayer dollars by helping smokers quit smoking when they are ready to quit.," said Rep. Kimberly Poore Moser, R-Taylor Mill..

Budget eliminating Corporation for Public Broadcasting will hit close to home

Compared to other countries, America spends very little on its public media. At four hundred forty five million, the budget of the agency works out to $1.35 per person per year. As one commentator put it - that's barely the dry cleaning bill for the Pentagon.

But that doesn't mean the program has stayed under the opponents' radar. The President has zeroed out funds for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.

That will hit us here at home if Congress doesn't step in.

Earthquake rattles Purchase

Residents of the Jackson Purchase experienced a small quake Wednesday morning. The 2.5 magnitude quake hit the Mississippi River five miles west of Bardwell Kentucky. It rattled residents and dishes.

The quake is this year's reminder that this is an earthquake zone.

Budget cuts to housing have local effect

The Columbus City Council toured the last house built under the program on Monday night. Mayor Kay Ferguson symbolically presented Christina Thomas with the key to her new home. Homeowner Christina Thomas and her four children, ages 10 months to 16 years, now have a beautiful four bedroom energy efficient home. Her house will be the last built for a long while if HUD money disappears.

Among the cuts to housing: disabled, senior, low income housing, homeless vets vouchers.

PTHS Mock Trial team finishes 13th out of 26 schools

The Paducah Tilghman High School Mock Trial Team competed at the Kentucky Mock Trial State Tournament on March 3 and 4. The team placed 13th overall out of 26 teams from across the state, and Tilghman was the only school representing Western Kentucky.

After March 1, 2017 that number will be reduced to 10 newspapers.

Three local newspapers, The Hickman Courier, The Hickman Gazette and The Fulton Leader, will merge into The Current.

According to Feeding America, "In 2015: 42.2 million Americans lived in food insecure households, including 29.1 million adults and 13.1 million children...

During January, the PADD distributed 70,658 pounds of food to 2,708 households.

Mayfield, Benton and Graves awarded grants from state

On February 16, 2017, Governor Bevin announced $1.3 million in recreation trail grants. The City of Mayfield was one of the recipients, receiving $49,766 for the Kess Creek Walking Trail. The money will go to extend the Trail and provide lighting.

The Governor also awarded land and water conservation grants to two Purchase area projects. Graves County Fiscal Court will receive $22,500 to improve the Mayfield-Graves County Baseball Park. Benton will get $75,000 for the City of Benton Pool House.
